According to the Gospel of Absolutely No One

Last week the Supreme Court overturned DOMA, with that crazy unpredictable Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority.

The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity. By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment…

…[DOMA] humiliates tens of thousands of children now being raised by same-sex couples. The law in question makes it even more difficult for the children to understand the integrity and closeness of their own family and its concord with other families in their community and in their daily lives.

Such an exciting, historic moment in history. It’s not just about gay rights, it’s about human rights. It’s about respect and love and equality but apparently my church DID NOT GET THE MEMO.

Yesterday at the end of mass the priest asked us to remain in our seats and began reading a letter from the bishop about the tragic Supreme Court decision and about how marriage is between a man and a woman and how there is no place for gays at a wedding except maybe in the choir. I started looking around, wondering when people were going to get up and walk out in disgust. (A majority of Catholics think same-sex marriage should be legal.) So I stood up and left, practically tripping over the guy next to me. Unfortunately I was wearing heels which click-clacked down the aisle and echoed through the church. If I go back I imagine there will be a photo of me under the caption “Wanted By the Vatican” or “Have You Seen This Heathen?”

I mean, seriously? No one else walked out? At the very least I thought there would be a slow clap followed by my fellow parishoners getting up to leave in protest and, perhaps, carrying me on their shoulders for my heroics. Instead I had to rush out and dodge the lightning bolts before they struck me down, leaving me incapacitated somewhere on Guadalupe.
